Armenia Doubles NATO Kosovo Peacekeeping Force

BRUSSELS (ArmRadio)-Armenia’s Defense Minister on Thursday repeated his country’s commitment to double its security forces within the NATO lead peacekeeping mission in Kosovo.

Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan’s pledge to increase the Armenian contingent was welcomed by NATO’s Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and came during a meeting of NATO Defense Ministers at the US lead military alliance’s headquarters in Brussels.

The meeting concluded with a decision that NATO was ready to back the launch of a new Kosovo domestic security force, in a move likely to exacerbate tensions with Serbia and Russia.

During the framework of the meeting, Ohanyan met with the Special Representative to NATO’s Secretary General Robert Simmons to discuss issues related to the implementation of Armenia’s NATO Individual Partnership Action Plan, and future NATO-Armenia cooperation. Ohanyan also met with the Defense Minister of Greece Evangeles Meymarakis to discuss the expansion of Armenian-Greek military cooperation.
