Karabakh Independence Cannot be Negotiated, Says Petrosian

Karabakh Foreign Minister Georgi Petrosian

STEPANAKERT (Armenpress)–“We have made our choice. Our independence cannot be a subject to bargaining,” said Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Foreign Minister Georgi Petrosian, in response to last week’s commen’s by official Baku that their participation in the peace process was already a compromise by the Azeri side.

“I am not aware of any change in Armenia’s position over the Karabakh conflict. Like my Armenian counterpart stated earlier the position of Armenia on the Karabakh issue has not changed,” said Petrosian stated

Last week, Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov claimed that there were “new nuances” in Armenia’s posturing regarding the Karabakh conflict resolution.

Petrosian reiterated Karabakh’s long-standing position that no peace deal can be made with the participation or agreement by Karabakh.

Mammadyarov also said that advocating for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, as well as Azerbaijan’s willingness to hold discussions on the status of Nagorno-Karabakh were the compromises the Azeri side was making in order to advance the peace negotiations.

Petrosian called the above statement a “thinly veiled diplomatic blackmail directed toward the mediators and Armenia.”

“The official Baku has always relied on pressure, threats and blackmail. This posturing by Azerbaijan not only hinders the conflict resolution process it also threatens the security and stability of the region,” added Petrosian
