Armenia Regains Image as Safe Tourist Destination

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The negative repercussions of the March 1-2 events in Yerevan on the number of foreigners visiting Armenia beginning to fade, Head of Armenia’s Tourism Department Mekhak Apresian told reporters during a press conference on Wednesday.

The negative effects of the events have lasted for about 45 days, which is fortunately, shorter than we predicted, Apresian said.

According to him, 83,000 foreign tourists visited Armenia in the first quarter of the year, 15 percent up from a year before. He said the forecast is that the overall number of tourists visiting Armenia in 2008 will increase by 20 percent by the year’s end.

Last year Armenia’s tourism sector grossed a total of $400 million in profits, up from $299 million in 2006.
