Russian, Azeri Leaders Set to Discuss Karabakh

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will be the main topic of the talks between the presidents of Azerbaijan and Russia, announced Russian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Vasily Istratov Tuesday.

The talks will be held when Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visits Azerbaijan Thursday to meet with his counterpart Ilham Aliyev.

“You know that Russia is not the only co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group and works together with the United States and France,” the Ambassador said. He also noted that Russia was urged to play a constructive role in the settlement of the conflict because of the historical circumstances and does its utmost to ensure a successful resolution to the conflict.

During the meeting in Baku the heads of the Azeri and Russian governmen’s will talk in-depth about the Karabakh conflict resolution process.

In other diplomatic news, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is scheduled to arrive in Turkey today for an official two-day visit at the invitation of his Turkish counterpart, Foreign Minister Ali Babacan.

The ministers will discuss a wide range of issues pertaining to Russian-Turkish cooperation, regional and international matters, including Iraqi and the Middle East, the Iranian nuclear issue, the situation in Kosovo, the Trans-Caucasus and Central Asia and the recent developmen’s in Cyprus.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution process will also be on the agenda, as will be the possible opening of Turkey’s border with Armenia.
