Armenian Eyesight Project Conducts Eye Exams in Karabakh

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The Armenian Eyesight Project (AEP) is set to launch a second round of trips to the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic starting July 24 to perform free eye exams and offer surgery for its residents.

Earlier in February the Armenian Eyesight Project had launched the second round of eyesight checking in Armenia. Tatevik Avetisian, a press officer for AEP, told Armenpress that its mobile eye clinic is now stationed in Nagorno-Karabakh’s Martakert and Karmir Shuka towns and its services are available to residents of nearby Hadrut, Martuni and other communities.

Earlier this year the AEP had checked the eyesight of children of kindergartens in Yerevan Achapnyak district, schools and vulnerable families. Overall some 5,600 children and 200 elders were checked.

Lectures were also delivered to the staff of 29 schools, kindergartens, as well as 29 medical workers. The doctors of the Armenian Eyesight Project also visited the provinces of Armavir, and Vayots Dzor to check some 4,999 adults and 92,000 children.

Along with eyesight examinations, the organization delivered lectures to schools in Yerevan’s Achapnyak district, as well as in Armavir and Vayots Dzor. Lectures were given to 4,600 children, 400 parents, teachers and medical workers. 40,400 special booklets were distributed.

It also delivered services to students of Gevorgian Seminary in Etchmiadzin. In June the AEP gave eye examinations to 800 prisoners in correctional facilities in Yerevan, Sevan and Kosh. Most of those examined will be given glasses.

In September the organization will visit the provinces of Ararat and Syunik. The AEP estimates that it will examine about 50,000 people will be examined by the end of the year.

Since 1992, the AEP has helped some 200,000 people in Armenia and has performed 8000 eye operations.
