Ex-Soviet States Still Largest Buyers of Russian Arms

NIZHNY TAGIL (Armenpress)–A senior Russian official in charge of arms and weapons sales said Thursday that the former Soviet republics are still Russia’s major buyers of weapons.

In an interview with Russian RIA Novosti news agency Konstantin Biryulin, deputy head of the federal military-technical cooperation service, said the arms market, formed during the Soviet era is still very much effective.

Even after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many of its republics still hold large quantities of Russia-made weapons and arms, he said.

“We are presenting new samples of military weapons and arms to these countries, which need them due to various circumstances,” he was quoted as saying.

He said many former Soviet republics are showing big interest in the 6th international weapons and arms fair in Nizhny Tagil.

A delegation from Armenia will be taking part in the fair for the first time this year, Biryulin said.

“We have exchanged opinions over military and technical cooperation between our two countries,” Konstantin Biryulin was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying.
