ARF Participates in Socialist International Climate Change Seminar

ST PETERSBURG, Russia (ARF Press Office)–A representative of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation on Monday and Tuesday participated in the Socialist International Commission for a Sustainable World Society Seminar focusing on climate change issues.

Representing the ARF at the meeting was ARF parliamentary bloc member Ara Nranian, who detailed the party’s position on the topic and outlined steps being taken in Armenian to address this important issue.

The ARF’s participation in the seminar comes amid growing worry about the future of Armenia’s environment. Pollution is rising at an exponential rate in Armenia, as the country faces the worse ecological threat in its history. According to the Armenia Tree Project, Over 750,000 cubic meters of forest coverage are now being cut annually. At the current rate of deforestation, Armenia faces the probability of turning into a barren desert within 50 years.

The seminar was jointly chaired by Ricardo Lagos and Goran Persson, both Co-Chairs of the Commission. The three main issues on the agenda were the tackling climate change with economic growth based on equity, employment and respect for the environment; assessing alternative sources of energy; and the strengthening national and international regulations protecting water and forests.

Hosted by the Chairman of the Council of the Russian Federation Sergey Mironov, the seminar is part of the Commission’s agreed program of work. Similar forums are set to be held in South Africa, China and the United States in 2008 and 2009. The next meeting of the full Commission will take place in Stockholm on Monday 8 September.
