Petrossian Says Karabakh Independence Irreversible, Forcing Stalin’s Borders Doomed

STEPANAKERT (Combined Sources)–Any attempt to ignore over a decade of independence and legal statehood by placing Nagorno-Karabakh back into the territory of Azerbaijan is doomed to fail, as it will escalate tension and may result in renewed conflict, Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Foreign Minister Georgy Petrossian told reporters on Wednesday.

"We have repeatedly stated that any attempt to bring Karabakh and its people back into the past and limit their freedoms are not only counter-productive but are also doomed to failure," he said.

Petrossian’s commen’s Wednesday came in response to reporters’ questions regarding official Azeri statemen’s hinging a settlement of the Karabakh conflict to Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.

"History can not be turned back and the attempts by Azerbaijan’s leadership to revive Stalin’s administrative borders will only provoke tension around the Nagorno Karabakh conflict," Petrossian said, noting that any decision that ignores the self-determination of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh may result in conflict escalation.

The Nagorno Karabakh Republic proclaimed its independence in accordance with the Soviet Constitution and it has been developing its statehood in compliance with international law, he stated.

"Independence is the highest aim for people of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic and we will never retreat from that position," Petrossian stated. "We are convinced that the international community understands this."
