Yerevan to Host Conference on Hamshen Armenia’s

YEREVAN (Armradio)–Yerevan will host on July 23 an international conference dedicated to the history and culture of the Hamshen’s Armenia’s.

The conference, entitled "Hamshen and Hamshen Armenia’s: History and Culture," is being organized by Armenia’s National Academy of Sciences Institute of Oriental Studies and the Yerkir Union of NGOs for Repatriation and Settlement. It will take place in Yerevan’s Congress Hotel.

Many ethnic Armenia’s living in Turkey, who, assimilated and converted to Islam after the Genocide, still preserve some elemen’s of their original ethnic culture in spoken language, customs and culture (song, dance, implemented art, etc).

Hamshens or Hamshen Armenia’s are the largest such ethnic group. Interest towards this particular group has considerably grown in recent years. There have been many scientific studies, publications and reports about the Hamshen Armenia’s. Hamshenians themselves have shown considerable activity in recognizing their Armenian origins.

According to the organizers, the aim of the conference is to facilitate further studies of Hamshen and Hamshen Armenian reality. The seminar hopes to create public and scientific attention for the issue, as well as strengthen ties with Hamshen Armenia’s.

The conference is to tackle a variety of topics, dedicated to Hamshen and Hamshen Armenia’s history, culture, language, folklore, etc.

Scientists (professors of oriental studies, linguists, ethnographers, historians and anthropologists) from Armenia, the Russian Federation and Turkey, will take part in the conference.

The conference is a part of the "Hamshen Week in Yerevan" initiative to take place starting July 21-27. "Hamshen Week" will feature a concert by the Hamshen ethnographic ensemble "VOVA" and a photo exhibition dedicated to the Hamshen Armenian architecture.

"Hamshen Week" is organized by the Naregatsi Art Institute, Bagaran NGO, Research on Armenian Architecture Center and the "Yerkir" Union of NGOs for Repatriation and Settlement.
