Sarkisian, Karekin II to Visit Crimea to Commemorate Medieval Monastery

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–President Serzh Sarkisian and Catholicos Karekin II left for Ukraine on Monday to take part in a ceremony marking the 650th anniversary of the medieval Armenian Monastery of the Holy Cross (Surb Khatch) in the Crimea.

According to the President’s press office, Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko will join Sarkisian at the blessing ceremony to be conducted by Karekin II.

The medieval monastic complex, established in 1358, served as the spiritual center for Crimea’s Armenian community-one of the oldest diasporan communities. It also served as a residence for the local bishops.

During his visit, Sarkisian will meet with Yuschenko and sign a cooperation agreement with the Ukrainian culture minister.
