Armenia Begins Repairs on Closed Railway to Turkey

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenia’s railway authorities launched Monday a major repair of the Akhurian 2 Kars-Gyumri railway station, idle since Turkey closed its border with Armenia in 1993 effectively shutting down the railway connecting the two countries.

According to Vahe Davitian, a spokesman of the South Caucasian Railway Company, the goal is to have the station ready to receive trains.

He said the company dispatched a team of 25 technicians to undergo the repairs, which are being funded by the rail company.

South Caucasian Railways’ CEO Alexander Kuznetsov has said that resumption of the railway communication between Yerevan and Turkish Igdir was not technically feasible, but rail traffic between Armenian Gyumri and Turkish Kars could resume without difficulty.
