Nalbandian to Meet Turkish Counterpart in New York

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenia’s Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian Monday said the he will further discuss Turkey-Armenia relations at a meeting with his Turkish counterpart on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York later in September.

Nalbandian, who met with Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan Saturday, said Turkish President Abdullah Gul’s visit to Armenia was positive.

“The two presidents took a very brave and important step. First of all our president’s initiative to invite the Turkish president is a historical step. By accepting the invitation, the President of Turkey made it a joint and mutual initiative. The steps taken by the presidents were important in the process to normalize relations,” said Nalbandian.

“With this visit the two presidents passed the half-way mark toward the normalization of relations between the two countries. The other half will be entrusted to diplomats with the task laid out by the presidents,” said Nalbandian, adding that all steps would be taken to ensure positive results.

The Foreign Ministry press service told Armenpress that in greeting Babacan, Nalbandian stated that that the Armenian side appreciated the high-level Turkish delegation’s visit to Armenia, saying the visit created clear opportunities for establishing dialogue between the leadership of the two countries.

Nalbandian reiterated to Babacan Armenia’s desire to establish diplomatic relations with Turkey without pre-conditions adding that the Armenian president viewed Gul’s visit as a serious impetus in that direction.

Nalbandian and Babacan also discussed Turkey’s initiative on the establishment of a Caucasus stability pact, with Nalbandian welcoming the initiative.

The two also discussed the recent developmen’s regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
