Armenia to Support Javakhk Education and Culture

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The Armenian government will support educational and cultural institutions in Javakhk, a predominantly Armenian region in Georgia facing a grave socioeconomic crisis, Deputy Diaspora Minister, Stepan Petrossian said Tuesday.

According to Petrossian, nearly 200 million drams from the government’s 2009 budget have been earmarked to help the reconstruction and renovation of Armenian schools in Javakhk. He added that the Diaspora Ministry has also developed a program to assist the current educational programs in Javakh.

He said the Diaspora Ministry will also support Javakhk musical groups, involve children in cultural programs and send representatives of Armenian culture to the region. Cultural programs will also be prepared and broadcasted through Armenian TV channels in Javakhk.

Petrossian also noted that the ministry is working to develop an online college in Armenia to serve Diasporan youth. The college is a collaboration between the Armenian General Benevolent Union and Yerevan State University the Armenia.

The online college, he added, will begin its operations by the end of 2009.
