US Special Envoy Meets with Turkish President

ANKARA (AP)–Turkish news agencies are reporting that U.S. Middle East special envoy George Mitchell has met with the president of Turkey as part of his quest for peace in the region.

No official account of the Wednesday meeting with President Abdullah Gul is expected.

Turkey, along with Egypt and France, has been trying to broker a permanent truce between Israel and Hamas following a shaky cease-fire.

Mitchell is making his second tour of the region as U.S. President Barack Obama’s special envoy. His visit to Turkey last month had been postponed, the reason for which had not been disclosed.
