CASPS Art Contest Celebrates Budding Talent of Armenian Youth

CASPS art contest participants and winners

On Thursday, February 5, 2009, the Committee for Armenian Students in Public Schools (“CASPS”) celebrated the budding talent of 12 students who participated in its second annual art contest for Glendale Unified School District Armenian high school students. The theme for this year’s art contest was “Across Generations-Honoring Our Ancestors.”

With the help and collaboration of District personnel, Armenian students were given the contest parameters and one month to prepare their artwork. Their submissions were fantastic. Each and every piece of artwork demonstrated talent, attention to detail and adherence to theme. The four judges, Samvel Saghatelian, Caroline Lais-Tufenkian, Aram Vartanov and Seeroon Yeretsian, had a very difficult time selecting the winners. This year’s awards included five recognitions ($50 each), three honorable mentions worth ($100 apiece), a third-place award ($200), a second-place award ($300), and a first-place award sponsored by the Armenian Educational Foundation ($500). Also, Artists For Kids sponsored a special award of $500.

The submissions of the participants were displayed at the GUSD Board Room for all students, parents, families, District staff and community members to enjoy. After opening remarks by CASPS’ Executive Director, Arsineh H. Hovannisian, Superintendent Michael Escalante congratulated CASPS and the students for their hard work. Each student then gave a brief description of his or her work and the judges spoke of the process and difficulty of choosing the winners. In their opinion, all the art contest participants were winners for displaying such talent, hard work and commitment to the theme. GUSD Board President Joylene Wagner and Board Member Greg Krikorian presented each of the students with special certificates.

Finally, the winners were announced. Mr. Ara Shabanian and Mr. Razmig Hovanessian of the Armenian Educational Foundation, and Mr. Samvel Saghatelian of Artists For Kids were invited to present their checks and to congratulate all the students. They were flanked by CASPS board members Rouben Gourjian, Medea Kalognomos, Dr. Hagop Der Megerdichian, Angie Mathevosian, Linet Haroutonian and Mary Balian. Each student was given a monetary award, a certificate of appreciation and a beautiful poster of the Armenian Alphabet created and donated by Mrs. Seeroon Yeretzian.

The recognition awards of $50 were awarded to David Arakelyan (Glendale High School), Hripsime Davtyan (Glendale High School), Mariam Davtyan (Glendale High School), Naira Hakobyan (Glendale High School), and Arpi Shamirzaeian (Hoover High School).

The honorable mentions of $100 were awarded to Evelina Kazaryan (Glendale High School), Steve Papuchyan (Hoover High School) and Anette Zakarian (Glendale High School). The third-place award of $200 was given to Shant Seraydarian (Crescenta Valley High School). The second-place award of $300 was given to Shant Alvandyan (Glendale High School); and the first-place award of $500 sponsored by the Armenian Educational Foundation was given to Arotin Hartounian (Hoover High School). A final special award of $500 sponsored by Artists For Kids was given to Haig Dalmaian (Hoover High School).

CASPS is very proud of all the students for exhibiting hard work and passion for their culture and history. We applaud the GUSD teachers who participated in this endeavor, and we thank the Armenian Educational Foundation and Artists For Kids for their generosity and continued support of CASPS and Armenian students in public schools. CASPS looks forward to next year’s event.
