ANC Glendale PAC Announces Endorsemen’s for 2009 Glendale Municipal Elections

GLENDALE–After extensive interviews with candidates and numerous consultations with community organizations and civic leaders, the Armenian National Committee of Glendale, Political Action Committee (ANCG-PAC) announced its slate of endorsemen’s for the upcoming April 7, 2009 Glendale Municipal elections.

The ANCG-PAC endorsed Ara Najarian and Bob Yousefian for two of the three Glendale City Council seats; Rafi Manoukian for City Treasurer; Ardashes Kassakhian for City Clerk; Eric Sahakian and Christine Walters for two of the three GUSD Governing Board seats; and Dr. Armine Hacopian, Anita Gabrielian and Ann Ransford for GCC Board of Trustees.

As part of the process, the ANCG-PAC examined some of the complex and pressing issues facing the city in order to make informed decisions within the different elected bodies. As part of a careful evaluation of the issues, the committee also reached out and met with a broad base of community organizations and leaders to listen to the opinions and concerns of its grassroots before making final endorsement decisions.

"This year’s ANCG-PAC endorsement process marked the most comprehensive examination of the issues facing our city that need to be addressed by those who get elected on April 7th," said Zanku Armenian, Chairman of ANCG PAC. "We believe that our endorsed candidates are best prepared to address those issues during this critical time. We look forward to working with all those who want to play a constructive role in meeting our city’s many challenges."

ANCG-PAC focused its discussions and evaluation on three key areas: leadership, accountability and building bridges in the community. For Glendale City Council candidates, specific issue items ranged from the city’s budgetary challenges, public safety, housing/development, open space/arts, to staff diversity, cultural sensitivity and community outreach. With respect to the City Clerk’s race, the committee assessed the candidate’s commitment to expanding voter registration, civic engagement and voter education. Fiscal accountability and financial planning served as key measuremen’s for selecting the right candidate for City Treasurer.

GUSD Governing Board candidates were evaluated on their vision and commitment to proactively address serious safety issues at schools, increased parent involvement, student orientation process, staff diversity, cultural sensitivity and community outreach among others. GCC Board of Trustees candidates were evaluated based on discussions about key issues such as student programs, staff diversity, expansion of the Garfield campus, safety and student transfer rates/statistics.

The ANCG-PAC will open its campaign headquarters located at 419 W. Colorado St., Glendale CA 91204 next week in order to promote its slate of candidates and encourage civic engagement through voter education and registration efforts.
