Holy Martyrs Elementary Joins Millions in Celebrating Reading

On Monday, March 2, the entire K ‘s 5 Holy Martyrs Elementary student population joined more than 45 million other readers across the nation to celebrate the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day.

The focus of the day is to motivate children to read, as well as help them master basic skills. Each year for the past twelve years thousands of schools, libraries and community centers have celebrated.

“We are very fortunate to have students who already love to read, so this was a great opportunity to bring together the upper and primary grades and have them engage in buddy reading,” said Azniv K. Sahakian, Academic Advisor, who organized the event.

Parading in their famous “Cat in the Hat” red and white striped hats, students visited one another’s classrooms and took turns reading to each other.

“I was so proud of the enthusiasm and maturity my 2nd graders displayed throughout the reading time,” said Talin Ordekian, who teaches Math and Art.

“I was also proud of how the hats, which we made during Art classes last week, inspired them to be in character,” she continued.

All students were encouraged to bring a favorite book, which would be appropriate for the grade-level they would visit. Students were especially encouraged to read Armenian books.

“Even though this reading celebration takes place each year on or near March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss, we wanted to make sure that we have a variety of authors and genres of work represented at our Buddy Reading Event,” said Sahakian.

“All of us felt such great pride in seeing our students read away in Armenian and English;brother to sister, cousin to cousin, and friend to friend. We hope to make this a new tradition.”
