Central California Student Journalist Completes Prestigious Workshop

0728alexpicture SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA–Clovis West Senior Alex Tavlian was one of 23 high school journalists to complete the 58th Annual California Scholastic Press Association Workshop.

The Workshop took place July 12-24, 2009 on the campus of the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Students came from secondary schools across California as well as from Colorado, Florida, and the Republic of South Korea.

The all-volunteer Workshop faculty consisted of staff members from the Associated Press, Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register, San Diego Union-Tribune, Los Angeles Daily News, San Jose Mercury News, Forbes Magazine, the Stockton Record, and Sacramento Bee, among other news organizations.

The Workshop included daily doses of online blogging, a full day of professional television writing and producing instruction, and a host of other classes ranging from news-writing fundamentals to the shape of future mass communication.

Tavlian and fellow students used the Cal Poly Mustang Daily newsroom to write and produce a four-page Workshop newspaper entitled, the CSPA Reporter, accessible online at www.cspaworkshop.org.

Initiated by legendary publisher William Randolph Hearst in 1950, the CSPA Workshop is the longest-running summer high school journalism program in the United States.

A 13-member Executive Board oversees the program. Larry Welborn, legal affairs reporter for the Orange County Register and CSPA Workshop alumnus, is the Chairperson.

Tavlian is a student member of the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Forensics League, the First Armenian Presbyterian Church of Fresno, and the Armenian Evangelical Youth Fellowship.
