Karabakh Says Azeris Playing ‘Islamic Factor’

YEREVAN (Combined Sources)—Nagorno-Karabakh Republic presidential spokesperson David Babayan said Thursday that Azerbaijan was using the ‘Islamic factor’ in the peace process, by pushing forward with a resolution in the United Nations General Assembly.

Last week, the Azeri representative to the UN Aqshin Mehdiyev announced that a resolution on the conflict, introduced by Azerbaijan, will remain on the agenda of the 64th UN General Assembly.

In March 2008, in a vote of 39 to 7, the 62nd General Assembly passed a resolution urging the immediate withdrawal from liberated territories around Karabakh and referred to Karabakh as part of Azebaijan recognized by the international community. More than 150 countries—including the Minsk Group Co-chairs: France, US and Russia—abstained or did not vote.

Babayan stressed to RFE/RL Thursday that it was mainly Islamic states that voted in favor of the resolution last year and that the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries, namely the United States, France and Russia, spoke and voted against the resolution. Babayan told RFE/RL Azerbaijan also could be using the “Islamic factor” at the upcoming session.

“What they are doing makes impossible not only a compromise but also possible involvement of other states in this process. Because if one side does not want to make any concession, what unilateral concessions can we speak about?” David Babayan told RFE/RL. “Baku’s interpretation of the Madrid principles only implies the philosophy of unilateral concessions, which is unacceptable. By this manner of action Baku once again makes such a development impossible, which is positive for us.”

Although Baku is trying various stratagems and conniving measures, we Armenians must remember that we hold all the land, the have won the war, we have passed a referendum in Karabakh, and we will not yield to threats from a country who has lost to us twice before.

We should have our government not succumb to western pressures nor to Azeri rhetoric.
