Russia Reaffirms Support For Turkey-Armenia Protocols

MOSCOW (RFE/RL)–Russia on Thursday again voiced support for the ongoing normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey which it said will be formalized in October.

In televised remarks cited by AFP news agency, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko described as a “very important step in the right direction” two draft agreements envisaging the establishment of diplomatic relations and reopening of the border between the two nations.

“The signing of the Armenian-Turkish documents, set for October 10 in Zurich, will… determine the steps of the two sides on to the path of a full normalization of intergovernmental ties between Armenia and Turkey,” said Nesterenko.

Neither Ankara, nor Yerevan have officially confirmed the date and location of the signing ceremony. “I am not giving any dates,” Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters in Ankara earlier in the day. Let’s wait for a statement from the Swiss. As Turkey, we have no doubts the protocols will be signed.”

Davutoglu also downplayed the uproar caused by the agreements in Armenia’s large and influential Diaspora. “Don’t listen to the voices from the Diaspora, there is no
surprise development for us,” he said, according to the Associated Press. “Everything is happening within its natural course.”

Meanwhile, a senior lawmaker from Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party said late Wednesday lack of progress between Azerbaijan and Armenia towards resolving the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh would affect Turkey’s parliamentary ratification of the agreements. “Lack of progress towards the resolution of Armenian-Azeri problems will certainly affect the parliamentary process,” Murat Mercan, chairman of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee, told Reuters.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has likewise repeatedly stated that Turkey will not open its border with Armenia as long as the Karabakh dispute remains unresolved. The Turkish-Armenian agreements make no reference to the conflict.

History repeats itself. Once again Russians pushed Armenians towards the Turks, this time by pressing them to accept Turkish pre-conditions in capitulating protocols. The most alarming thing is that in the future that can withdraw, as they did in 1915, and leave Armenians again one on one facing the barbarian Turks. All this happenning becuase the Armenian leadership had no guts to insist that such protocols contain a single phrase on the willingness of the parties to establish diplomatic relations and open the state border. What historical commission? What recognition of common borders and territorial integrity? What past agreements and treaties? Did Russia herself sign any peace treaty with Japan on Kuril islands (Northern Territories)? No, Russia is still in the state of war with Japan. Do both countries sit and sign humiliating protocols? No, they regardless, developed diplomatic relations, opened all borders, and are engaged in all sort of bilateral activity: trade, commerce, cultural exchanges, etc. In order to resist Turkish pressure, an Armenian president should have been legally elected, first of all, and enjoy his citizens’ support. Without this he becomes a marionette in the hands of the powerful. But treason, too, has a price, Mr. President, and you will HAVE to pay it!

ISN’T THAT PRESSURE? ……………………………………………………… MR PRESIDENT ARMENIAN PEOPLE ARE MORE SMARTER THAN YOU THINK . DEAR SARGSYAN I KNOW YOU FEEL GOOD WHEN PRESIDENT OBAMA OR TAYYIB OR RUSSIAN’S SUPPORT YOU BUT YOU ARE NOT THEIR PRESIDENT YOU ARE ARMENIAN PRESIDENT AND VAST MAJORITY OF ARMENIANS ARE NOT SUPPORTING YOUR PROTOCOL.

Russia will soon loose Armenia and the whole of the Caucasus if it continues in this way, Armenia will soon become a valeyet of Turkey, Russia should have insisted that these protocols are changed only than they could have relied on Armenia, a monumental mistake by Armenia and Russia.

Well said by everyone. I also join the forum to express my outrage at all that is going on; it is the repetition of history when all the big nations watched as millions of Armenians were getting slaughtered. What also surprises me is that I can only catch the Armenian news and outrage on Horizon TV; all the other Armenian channels are showing their normal programming as if nothing is going on. This should be the collective outrage of all Armenians and should be showing on all the channels 24/7. The president and all their leaders should know that we are all in disagreement to these protocols. I heard some Armenians saying that this is good for Armenia from an economical standpoint. I’m not sure if I agree with that; even if all the preconditions of Karabagh and genocide recognition were taken out, does opening the border to Turkey really make our economic condition better??? What do you guys think. I actually think it could make it worse.
