Azeri Parliament to Hold Hearings on Protocols

BAKU (—Azerbaijan’s parliament is scheduled to hold hearings on recently signed protocols to establish relations between Armenia and Turkey, the Azeri Today online news portal reported on Monday.

“I and my counterparts who have just returned from Turkey will put forward proposals to prevent discussion of the protocols signed at the Turkish parliament,” Zahid Oruj, a member of the Azerbaijani Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, said.

Oruj said that an appeal to the Turkish parliament to drop the Armenia accords will depend on discussions in the Azeri parliament.

“Azerbaijan takes certain diplomatic actions. I believe we can use different influence tools,” the parliamentarian said.

Oruj added that he expects parliament to discuss regional issues alongside the Turkey-Armenia protocols.

He said parliament should analyze the possible benefits and pitfalls for Azerbaijan that would follow the opening of borders between Armenia and Turkey. “Exchange of views should be held on this issue, as the parliament is a legislative body is a branch of the government,” Oruj added.
