New Elections if Sarkisian Concedes on Karabakh, Says Manoyan

MHM42450 copy (Small) YEREVAN—The Armenian Revolutionary Federation’s political affairs director said in an interview with Reuters Tuesday that if President Serzh Sarkisian makes concessions in the Karabakh conflict process, then new elections would be demanded.

This follows the party’s announcement recently that it, as Manoyan said, would use “every available political and constitutional means” to block ratification of the recently signed Armenia-Turkey protocols.

“If we do not succeed, the only alternative left is to go for a change of administration, to have a new president and a new national assembly which will renounce these protocols as null and void,” added Manoyan.

The Reuters article focused on the opposition to the protocols, which some have hailed as historic. Reporting for the news agency, Hasmik Mkrtchyan also discusses the massive protests Sarkisian faced during his Diaspora tour, as well as the negative ramifications of the protocols on the Karabakh conflict resolution.

Turkey demands that Armenia make concessions over Nagorno-Karabakh conflict before parliament ratification of the protocols.

“I do not believe the Armenian authorities are capable of convincing the Armenian public that unilateral concessions on two fronts, namely Armenian-Turkey relations and the Karabakh conflict are necessary,” Manoyan told Reuters.

“The Turkish government will use the ratification process in the Turkish parliament as leverage to try to pressure the Armenian side to give in to Azeri-Turkish demands regarding resolution of the Karabakh conflict,” said Manoyan.

If Russia and the US have been calling the shots on the protocols, and selling Armenia up the river, then there is every reason to believe that those same countries are calling the shots on Artsakh and will sell it up the river too.

There is also reason to believe that a deal on Artsakh is imminent since ratification of the protocols by Turkey (and Armenia) would require Turkey to open the border within two months, and Turkey has said it would not open the border without an Artsakh agreement being signed first.

Let the political parties say NOW, not later, what they believe is acceptable and not acceptable in an Artsakh agreement. We don’t need any more surprises like the protocols/.

And we should focus more on WHO is exerting external pressure on Armenia and WHY that pressure is being exerted. Sargsian and Nalbandian, as well as being dishonest, are clearly being manipulated by others.

Who ARE Sargsian and Nalbandian, by the way? What are their backgrounds? Why should we have faith in some old Communists like them? If they believed in Communism, why? If not, then maybe they don’t believe in Armenia.

In general, what information do certain “powers” (such as Russia) have on these two men and their backgrounds that could cause them to “fall in line” when ordered to do so? People in Armenia must know. Let’s find out, shall we?

The complexity of the political-economical situation today requires crystal-clear credit-line for a political leader in order to act as a patriot of the country to which he/she is a head. To expect that Sargsian (or Ter-Petrosian, or paron X-ian) is qualified to this criteria is naive. Given what we have, we better ask, why Sargsian is giving up to the chantage (blackmailing) mostly outpouring from the USA or UK or EU or ABC-…-XYZ well-wishers? Besides his own failures, because there is a huge political-economical body in Armenia who has no other light of the day, but getting more rich, no matter what is the cost. I say this with no regret, or sadness. I take it as reality.
If you know any other nation in the world, which has a such big chunk of 5th colony from children of his own, let me know. So, the problem is not only about Sargsian, it is about this self-centered layer, which got thicker due to relaxed politics of all presidents, including Sargsian. This is the Problem.

If there is a room for helping, I would try to convince Sargsian to use, although shameful, but widely accepted strategy of the new world leaders: Refuse your promise, say I changed my mind. Who does not do it? Look around. You might receive Nobel Piece Prize for that. I am serious.

What if we put our efforts into this channel – submit projects of getting out of the situation. Hope that delay of ratification by other side will give us some time.

As to the Artsakh, there is no external communication lines open for Artsakh process at this moment. We are very busy with this … to handle properly. I think, this should be the right reply to all anxious and interested sides.
So, let us set site which collects Proposals on “Armenian Way Toward Better Solution”.
