Gathering at Navasartian Games’ Festival in Support of Homenetmen

VAN NUYS—Celebrating its 35th year, the Homenetmen Navasartian Games’ Festival kicked-off on Thursday, July 1st on the grounds of Birmingham High School and a tremendous crowd gathered in enjoyment. Each year, this festival brings together countless people who excitedly take pleasure in everything that lies at the very essence of Navasartian.

This year’s opening proved to be truly impressive with live music performed by prominent Armenian singers offering continuous entertainment. Early performances included Sahag Sislian, who also sang the Armenian and Homenetmen anthems, and Hratch Bogharian. Creating a truly dynamic atmosphere, entertainment continued with Karnig Sarkissian singing his well-known patriotic songs and a spectacular fireworks show that lit the skies.

People of all ages were drawn to the plentiful booths set up by Homenetmen chapters selling tasty food, local businesses advertising their products, and sister organizations promoting the valuable work they carry out. An area designated with games and arts & crafts proved to be much pleasurable for children.

Homenetmen Central Executive Vice-Chair Koko Balian, Navasartian’s Honorary President George Jamgochian, Exemplary Homenetmen Members, chapter executives, members of communities from near and far, as well as representatives of “Asbarez” and “Horizon” who communicate Navasartian news to our community, were all in attendance resulting in a wonderful turn-out.

While the festivities ensued outdoors, the gymnasiums housed basketball tournaments for various divisons. Dedicated athletic fans, which included a large amount of youth, filled the stands as spectators in these exciting games. Certain divisions saw the conclusion of their tournaments. As such, the championship game for the Girl’s E Division was held between Homenetmen “Sepan” and “Massis,” with the “Massis” team as victorious.

On Thursday, July 1st, tennis tournaments took their start at Birmingham High School as well and continued on Friday, July 2nd. Volleyball tournaments were held at “Rose and Alex Pilibos” Armenian School on July 2nd also.

Great community support and a growing number of attendees is expected to continue throughout the weekend. Upcoming schedules include singer Karnig Sarkissian performing at Birmingham High School this evening along with another fireworks show, the Closing Ceremonies at Birmingham on Sunday, July 4th at 6:00 p.m. with the presentation of trophies, and a lively performance by Harout Pamboukjian thereafter.
