GORIS, Armenia–The city of Goris is now a regional center of Cardiological research and treatment, giving victims of heart attacks and acute coronary syndrom (ACS) in Southern Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh a fighting chance to survive, Armenia Fund announced on Monday after officially inaugurating the Zangezur Regional Cardiological Center.
The region of Syunik alone registers more than 50 new cases of ACS and heart attacks each year and if treatment is not administered within an hour or two, patients have little chance of survival. Before the opening of the Center, acute heart patients had to be transported to Yerevan, which is more than 3 hours away from Goris and 5-7 hours from Karabakh, depending on the region and time of year.
The Zangezur Cardiology Center, however, will change all that. The Center will serve Armenia’s Syunik and Vayots Dzor region as well as the entire population of Nagorno Karabakh. It will simultaneously administer up to 6 emergency procedures as well as provide care to up to 16 inpatients and 20 outpatients at a time.
The two-story facility features Departments of Echocardiography, Electrocardiography, Radiology, Angiography and Angioplasty, The center also has an Intensive Care Unit, an Emergency Room, a Laboratory and eight patient rooms with 14 beds. The Clinic has an autonomous boiler house with a dedicated water line.
The clinic’s personnel will include experienced physicians who have concluded medical residencies at the Yerevan Nork-Marash Medical Center. The medical staff will consist of 45 professionals, who will collaborate with the French-Armenian Doctors’ Association, who will be providing on-going trainings.
The development of healthcare facilities in Armenia has seen a marked boost in recent years, according to Hayastan All-Armenia Fund Executive Director Ara Vardanyan. This year alone, he added, Armenia Fund has completed the reconstruction of the Regional Hospital in Noyemberyan, St. Mary’s Medical Center, Nork Infectious Disease Hospital and Kanaker Zeytun Hospital in Yerevan, and the Maternity Ward in Abovyan.
The more than $1.2 million project was financed by the French affiliate of Armenia Fund (Fonds Armenien de France), the Marseille-based French-Armenian Doctors’ Association (Association de Sante Franco-Armenienne) and Bouches-du-Rhune, a large administrative area within the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur of France. A sizable portion of the financing was also provided by Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri and French-Armenian benefactor Krikor Shahinian.
“The French benefactors, particularly specialists representing the French-Armenian Doctors’ Association, chose Syunik as the site of the future cardiology center after an extensive study of the region’s geographical location, existing medical facilities, and areas of need,” explained project coordinator, heart surgeon Dr. Mher Sousani. “Ultimately Goris was chosen for its proximity to Kapan, Sisian, and Artsakh alike.”

is the region called “Zangezur” or Syunik ?
The official name is Syunik, however it is alternatively known as Zangezur which is a name of Persian origin translating to “Bell of Strength/Might,” the name most likely goes back to the time when the region was under the Persian Empire.
well done i feel great when i see diasphora is helping our little armenia
Sounds like the only way to transport patients is via road. Is a medical helicopter service workable in a mountainous country like Armenia? Many patients are transferred by air ambulances and in case of emergencies, a flight would be faster than going through winding roads through mountains. I’m glad to hear about developments such as these.

What is the connection with PM Hariri?
