New America Media: Santa Monica Taxi Ordinance Leaves Armenian Cabbies Stranded

New America Media on Thursday published a story about the recent decision by the Santa Monica Council to limit the number of taxi companies that could legally operate in Santa Monica. The controversial ordinance, approved by the Council on November 9, awards taxi franchises to only five companies, while effectively prohibiting the city’s five local Armenian-owned taxi companies from operating within its bounds.

In the article, titled “New Santa Monica Ordinance Leaves Armenian Cabbies Stranded,” ianyanmag.com editor Liana Aghajanian describes the scene at a heated rally held outside the November 9 hearing and explores the issue and its impact on hundreds of Armenian American taxi drivers that now face the stark reality of unemployment.

The complete New America Media story can be read here.

The ordinance has been an ongoing issue in Santa Monica since late summer, with the Armenian Youth Federation and the Armenian National Committee of America organizing the taxi drivers against the controversial measure. The AYF reported on the hearing earlier this week in a press release on their website, which can be read here.

Excuse my curiosity…but are there any influential Turks living in Santa Monica area that have done…I don’t know what…whatever an Armenian can expect from a Turk. Could Armenian reporters and journalists, or whoever, investigate about Turkish, let us say “donations”, to the city? I might be wrong, but as an Armenian-American in this good country, I believe in what good old Victor Hugo had said “There is destruction everywhere… Turks have passed from here…”
