YEREVAN–VivaCell-MTS, Armenia’s largest mobile operator, announced on Monday the commercial test-launch of its new 4G LTE network in Yerevan. The new mobile broadband network is being deployed in cooperation with Ericsson.
VivaCell said the pilot-launch of the Long-term Evolution (LTE) test network in Yerevan will encompass Downtown Yerevan and the Komitas neighborhood. The company says this is the first step towards the full-scale rollout of a 4G/LTE network in Armenia.
The official launch ceremony was attended by Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan and other high-ranking officials and included a live test of the new network, which boasts a theoretical capacity of download speeds up to 150 Mbps and upload speeds up to 50 Mbps.
“VivaCell-MTS’ LTE roll-out positions Armenia to be one of the selected global leaders in 4G deployment. In addition, the launch of 4G is expected to present Armenia as a country with attractive communication infrastructure,” commented VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph Yirikian.
LTE, the new generation mobile communication technology, enables the provisioning of new mobile applications with higher bandwidth demand.
