BURBANK, CA—The Armenian National Committee of America-Burbank Chapter announced its endorsements for the upcoming Burbank City elections on Thursday, putting the weight of the Armenian community behind Gary Bric and Bob Frutos for City Council and Dave Kemp, Ted Bunch, and Roberta Reynolds for School Board.
The endorsements came after a lengthy interview process from January 21-23.
“We are proud to endorse candidates who have and continue to serve not only the Armenian community but the diverse communities which makeup the great City of Burbank,” said Armond Aghakhanian, ANCA-Burbank’s Electoral/Political Committee Chairman. “The decision was based on a three pronged process which included questionnaires, interviews, and a review of candidate track records.”
“We will continue our open dialogue and cooperation on matters of mutual interest in Burbank with all the candidates, to make it an even better place for all of us,” he said.
There are two seats available in this year’s City Council elections with four candidates vying for the positions. Of those candidates, only one incumbent, Gary Bric, is running for re-election.
Bric received the endorsement for his support during the current term, receptive attitude toward the community and his overall viability as a candidate. He was endorsed by ANCA-Burbank on his first, unsuccessful, run in 2003.
Frutos, who is also running for City Council, clinched the ANCA-Burbank endorsement for his understanding of and empathy towards the Armenian community and its needs.
The School Board, meanwhile, has three open seats, with four candidates competing for the spots. Incumbent candidates Kemp, Bunch, and Reynolds received the ANCA-Burbank endorsement for their record of service to Burbank’s school system and longstanding support of Armenian issues.
The endorsed candidates will be officially introduced to community leaders and activists on Monday, February 7, at the ANCA-Burbank’s annual reception.
Burbank’s Vote by Mail ballots must be received by the City Clerk’s office by February 22 for the Primary Nomination Election. If all the available seats are not filled by candidates garnering a simple majority of the votes, the winners will be determined in the April 12th General Municipal Election.
The Armenian National Committee of America Burbank Chapter advances the social, economic, cultural, and political rights of the area’s Armenian-American community and promotes increased Armenian-American civic participation at the grassroots and public policy levels.
