Karabakh is Safe for Tourists, Says Prime Minister

STEPANAKERT—Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Prime Minister Ara Harutyunyan on Wednesday responded to a bulletin posted by the British Foreign Ministry on its website that urged UK citizens to refrain from visiting the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

In a written statement, Harutyunyan stressed the importance that Karabakh’s authorities place on developing the republic’s tourism industry and reassured potential tourists that the “security of visitors from different countries to the Nagorno-karabakh republic is fully guaranteed.”

“The executive authorities of Nagorno Karabakh keep in focus the development of tourism in Artsakh. Highly appreciating the diplomatic experience of Great Britain, as well as its care for the security of its citizens, I consider it necessary to inform that the security of visitors to NKR from different countries is fully guaranteed.”

Thousands of tourists have visited Artsakh since it proclaimed its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Harutyunyan said, adding that there has never been a problem with their security. “The Armed Forces of Nagorno Karabakh protect the country from foreign aggression and all tourists visit Artsakh through the territory of the Republic of Armenia, not Azerbaijan,” he explained.
