Villaraigosa Appoints George Hovaguimian to City Planning Commission

Newly-appointed George Hovaguimian

LOS ANGELES—Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Thursday announced the appointment long-time community leader George Vahe Hovaguimian to the City Planning Board, the mayor’s office reported.

“We congratulate George Hovaguimian’s appointment to this very important commission.” said Andrew Kizirian, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region.  “George is a leader in his industry and in the Armenian community, and we know that he will serve the Mayor and all Angelenos capably.”

“We applaud Mayor Villaraigosa’s decision to include George in his administration” continued Kizirian. “The Mayor has been a leader on Armenian-American issues and George’s appointment is yet another example of the Mayor’s vision of a Los Angeles that is built on on diversity, strengths and knowledge of all Angelenos.”

“George is an example of the high quality and civically involved Armenian-Americans who work on daily basis to make Los Angeles the best city it can be.  We look forward to working with the Mayor and other state and national leaders to increase the representation of Armenian-Americans on Boards and Commissions.

Hovaguimian has more than 35 years of international and domestic experience in engineering, energy conservation, alternative energy systems, project and construction management, and business planning.

He is currently the President of AirPlus Engineering Consultants Inc., a firm that expanded and re-modeled St. Vincent Jewelry Center in Downtown Los Angeles, expanded the Ferrahian High School in Encino, and the Olympia Medical Center in Los Angeles. Throughout his extensive career, he has worked on projects such as the Artist Management Group and William-Morris Talent Agency buildings in Beverly Hills, the Space Shuttle Project at Vandenberg Air force Base, ARCO Central Gas Facility at Prudhoe Bay Alaska, the Rockwell Science Center in Camarillo, and Boeing Satellite Systems in El Segundo.

Hovaguimian has strong ties to the Armenian community. In 1991, he took a leave of absence to work as the Assistant Minister of Energy & Fuel for the then newly independent Republic of Armenia. With a local team, he modernized and upgraded the local energy infrastructure with new electrical power plants, new gas pipelines and upgrading existing power plants and gas distribution centers.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the American University of Beirut and pursued graduate work at UCLA. He is a registered professional engineer in California, Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii.

Villaraigosa also appointed Justin J. Kim, and Robert L. Lessin to the City Planning Commission, and Victor H. Narro to the Community Redevelopment Agency Board of Commissioners.
