MONTEBELLO—The Armenian National Committee of America, San Gabriel Valley Chapter announced today that it will mark the installation of the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument freeway signs on State Highway Route 60 (Pomona Freeway) during a ceremony on April 1, at 11 a.m.
The ceremony will be hosted at Bicknell Park, the site of the monument, in Montebello located at 901 San Clemente, Montebello, CA 90640.
“We are gratified and proud of the bold stance taken by our State Legislature in enacting a law designed to right a historic wrong,” said Montebello Armenian Center chairman Nazareth Sadorian. “The installation of these sign sends a clear message to all that the people of California will always dare to tell the truth about the Armenian Genocide. For this, we thank the people of our great State and we commend majority leader Chuck Calderon for his vision, courage and leadership.”
The installation ceremony will be attended by state, county and city officials as well as the Grigor Hovhannissian, the Republic of Armenia’s Consul General in Los Angeles. After the installation, a brief program will take place at the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument.
California Assembly Majority Leader Charles Calderon will deliver the keynote address, along with remarks by Montebello Armenian Center chairman Nazareth Sadorian, and ANCA SGV member Murad Minasian.
Long time ANCA activist and attorney Levon Kirakosian will serve as the master of ceremonies. A reception will follow immediately with light snacks and beverages with an opportunity to take pictures with the sign rendering at the Monument.
The freeway sign installation was authorized by an Act of California State Legislature, ACR 148. The legislation was authored by Assembly Majority Leader Charles Calderon and adopted in 2010.
It provides for California Department of Transportation to erect signs on State Highway 60 directing motorists to the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument at Bicknell Park in Montebello. It further requires of Caltrans to install the signs between March 23-24, 2011 on the westbound and eastbound portions of State Highway Route 60 leading to Garfield Avenue exit.
The Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument was constructed in 1965 symbolizing the first Genocide of the 20th century and in memory of the 1.5 million Armenians who were systematically annihilated at the hands of the Ottoman Turkish Government from 1915 to 1923.
The ANCA SGV encourages the public to attend and participate in this historic event.
