STEPANAKERT (Yerkir)—Technical issues were cited Tuesday for a possible postponement of the opening of the Stepanakert airport, which was slated for May 9.
“Aside from technical concerns, there are no obstacles in opening the Stepanakert airport,” said Nagorno-Karabakh Republic presidential spokesman Davit Babayan in speaking to Kavkazi Uzel online newspaper. He emphasized that Azeri threats to down civilian aircraft had no bearing in the decision.
Babayan said while it would have been ideal to open the airport on May 9, which is the anniversary of the liberation of Shoushi and Victory Day, the authorities are mindful to ensure that all necessary measures were taken to guarantee the optimum operation of the airport.
“This is a very complex matter and it requires that we are fully ready, in order to avoid any technical deficiencies,” said Babayan, who explained that the airport was originally slated for operation in October or November of 2010 and ensured that the facility will be operational this year, just not on May 9.
The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Civil Aviation Department head Valery Adbashian announced that while a specific date has not been chosen, the airport, most likely, will be operations in early summer.

Armenians have fallen to international pressure!
Still in 2010 officials in NKR did announce that the airport will be finished end of 2011 (even there are vidoes of Haylur news/intervies in Youtube ). I was positively surprised as I heard the date in May 2011
All of this is really funny. First, Armenians say the date is set to May 9. If I remember correctly it was back in november when they announced that Erivan-Khankendi flights will begin on May 9 and that they were “putting the finishing touch on the runway”. They even said the date has something to do with the “liberation” of Shuha (it’s actually occupied by Armenians, not liberated, but that’s a different story). Then, more recently, they said Sarkisian will be the first passenger on that plane on that day. And now some spokesman of Bako Sahokyan, I believe his name is David Babayan, says that “May 9 was never set as the opening date. There was no date or anything. These were just rumors that circulated quickly,” (Source: panarmenian.net). This is 1.
2 – Today, they claim that the opening of the illegal airport is postponed because of “technical issues”. Apparently they are installing some “weather devices” or whatever. This is also coming from Bako’s department.
Really fascinating how nobody ever thought about bad weather conditions when they were “putting the finishing touch” and setting the opening date to May 9 and even annoucing to the entire world about their president’s schedule which turned out to be fake too. It’s not like these devices will be installed in a day or two. It’s gonna take at least a few month or may be more. So you can’t say it was just a minor miscalculation either.
This is the biggest and the most desperate circus I’ve ever seen. It’s obvious to everyone. You don’t dare to open that airport. You perfectly understand that this means WAR. International community is a powerful weapon. And guess what. Karabagh is still recognized as integral part of Azerbaijan. INTERNATIONALLY.
