YEREVAN (PanArmenain.net)—BarCamp, a two-day information technology conference held over the weekend, brought together 1,000 IT specialists, students and journalists, according to organizers.

The participants of the conference exchanged views and ideas on the latest trends and achievements in IT, telecommunications and media, as well as geo-location social networks, e-books and libraries, mobile journalism and other topics.

Representatives of Opera Software Company, the special guests of the conference, discussed modern Web standards and presented statistics of Opera usage for mobile internet.

Journalist and anchor of BBC World News, Pooneh Ghoddoosi, briefed the conference on how the BBC covers some events with the assistance of amateur videos recorded by witnesses with their cell phones and the expansion of that trend in broadcast news.

BarCamp is an international network of user-generated conferences. They are open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants. The first BarCamps focused on early-stage web applications, and were related to open source technologies, social protocols and open data formats. The first BarCamp was held in Palo Alto, California, in 2005. Since then, BarCamps have been held in over 350 cities around the world.

ArmenTel, Internews NGO through the financial support of USAID, Deem Communications and Opera Software companies, as well as PanARMENIAN Media assisted in the organization of BarCamp Yerevan 2011. The event has been organized in Armenia since 2009.

Yervand Aghababyan said that it will be necessary to organize the next event in a larger venue given the great number of participants at this year’s conference.
