STEPANAKERT—Festivities to mark the 20th anniversary of the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Artsakh, kicked off Thursday with an official ceremony led by the country’s President Bako Sahakian and attended by Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian.

The capital was filled with Karabakh residents, who had flocked there from different regions to mark this momentous occasion.

On hand were Karabakh war veterans, servicemen, as well as political, cultural, arts sports and media personalities who were awarded with Karabakh state medals on the occasion of the 20th anniversary.

In a message to the country, Sahakian emphasized the importance of Artsakh’s independence, detailing its historical importance and emphasizing the right to self-determination of the people of Karabakh.

“This is a celebration of the right to live free and safely in one’s own home, to raise children educating them with one’s own culture and religion. Neither the struggle and survival for centuries, nor the tyranny for decades and the persecution of Armenians could break our determination,” said President Sarkisian during his congratulatory remarks.

“The power called Azerbaijani Armed Forces was busy with massacres, destruction, robbery, ethnic cleansing, and annihilation of the peaceful population in front of the international community, said Sarkisian saying that Azeri oppression made people choose “life instead of death in order to celebrate victory today. Nagorno-Karabakh celebrates its 20 years of independence.”

    Not for long…

    • Avery says:

yes, for very long – for Artsakh.
not for long for the fake, artificial country called ‘Azerbaijan’, that will break up into many little independent countries of the people that are living under the yoke of the Aliyev Clan: Tats, Talishes, Udins, Lezgins, Zakhors, Luitsis, Avars…

Let’ see, what should the country of Lezgins be called, for example: Republic of Lezgia or Republic of Lezgistan ? Up to Lezgins really. After all its their own land.

Azer you are a dreamer but thats ok its ok to dream, you remind me of a kid that stole his neihbours bicycle and than the kids daddy came and took he bicycle back, and you kept crying that the bicycle is yours and after few police investigatore came around from the bicycle police division and conducted their final investigation they told the kid that the bicycle does not belong to you it belongs to the rightfull owner, and than the kid ( could be you) started crying and walked away our and went back riding his donkey again, so you keep on dreaming as dreaming does not cost you a penny.

      Azer,
Tell me when any such country as Azerbaijan was created and then when did Artsakh got to be part of it, may be that would would give us a clue on how did Artsakh got to be yours.
You were planted on our right side to keep plucking our flesh from the right while the Turks kept plucking us from the left but that was when you and the Turks used to be on a very lucky streak.
Reality has a way of catching up with these kinds of political aberrations and it does. Can you count on luck being there for you each time?

    • Grish Begian says:

Please delete any negative posts for this great article. It’s simple, it makes sense to me. I don’t know you but most of the LA Armenians expect a legit level of news production from the name ASBAREZ. Maintain your level of trust for goodness sake. Thank you and enjoy your weekend. PS. If you need monitors, just create an article and ask. You will be surprised the level of support web users are willing to give. Mersi.

PS. More pictures of Armenia please. Picture say a thousand words.
