DUBLIN, Ireland (The Armenian Weekly)—Armenia’s glorious and unprecedented march toward the Euro 2012 was brought to a halt in Dublin, as Ireland defeated the Armenian soccer team 2-1.
In the 26th minute, the Armenian team found itself outnumbered on the field as Berezovski was shown the red card.
In the 43rd minute, Valery Aleksanyan scored an own goal, giving Ireland the lead.
The first half ended 1-0 for Ireland.
In the second half, Ireland scored a goal early on (59th minute) and put the hosts 2 goals ahead.
At this point, the odds were overwhelmingly stacked against Armenia. Facing the Irish on their home turf, with only 10 players, and needing three goals to qualify.
In the 62nd minute, Henrik Mkhitaryan scored a goal for Armenia.
In the 86th minute, Doyle (Republic of Ireland) received a second yellow card and was dismissed.
The Armenian soccer team came to Dublin with high spirits, having won their last 3 matches by scoring 11 goals and receiving only one.
Armenia needed to win the game to take second place behind Russia in Group B and set itself up for another playoff for Euro 2012, while all Ireland needed was to hold the Armenian side to a draw.

Despite the loss, it was a magnificent effort and run by our lads! Apres! The Armenian nation is proud of you all!
“magnificent effort … by our lads!” “the Armenian nation is proud of you”…
–spoken like a true charlatan, a pretender congratulating his subordinates for a game well-played.
Who died and made you King? you are a cockroach congratulating the owner of the house for a game well played, in the name of the Armenian nation.
You need to see a psychologist my friend, you have some anger issues.
All Norin said was “We’re proud of you.”
Shhhhh AK, try to satiate your stupidity somewhere else. Replying to a random comment just to insult someone is primitive. I’m no king, and these fellow Armenians are nobody’s subordinates, but you only proved with your infantile rage that you could in fact pass for something that crawls. As the other poster said, get some psychiatric help, learn how to accept criticism, then come back.
A valiant effort..Never give up attitude was shown..just plain unlucky
great play despite everything really arenian team was great getseeeee
so what ?? we never give up !! from no where we succeeded this much for now ,! in very short time we be in better shape watch Armenia for sure in 2014
Great run! Better luck next time! Let’s work on our defense toO!
Couldn’t agree more, I am extremely proud of our guys, could not even imagine we could play like this, thank you very much , looking forward to world cup qualification.
Of defeats victories are born !
Robbed, clearly Berezovski did not deserve to be red carded as the video and picture prove!!

STILL ARMENIAN NATION IS PROUD OF YOU `GUYS!
. OUTR NATINAL TEMA SHOULD GET MORE FINANCIAL ASSITANS!
I wonder how much did they pay to have first goal? They should check alexanian and berzuckiys bank accounts and watch them and their relatives if they buy anything in a near future, as far as house , new car etc…it is so f,,in obviousness it not even funny.
stupid comment! Don´t see what happend before!
You are not even dignified of a response, but I must defend these players’ honor.
Must you suspect corruption in everything that has to do with Armenia? Enough is enough, it’s getting disgustingly annoying now. First of all, learn how to spell Berezovsky, Roman is not Bulgarian. You are not half the man or the Armenian (are you even?) that Berezovsky is. He loves this country more than you could ever imagine. Earlier in his career he had the option of playing for the Russian, Ukranian, or Armenian national team. Only a stupid man would pick Armenia many would say, but Berezovsky did just that, choosing his birthplace over the others, and he is not even ethnically Armenian but Russian. Berezovsky would do anything to see his team through to the play-offs, and he deserves to be there most of all. For you to even joke about Berezovsky doing such a thing is an insult. I personally saw Berezovsky after the game and he was emotionally crushed.
As for Alexanyan, did you see the poor boy’s reaction? He was devastated. If that was intentional, then forget football, Oscars await this fine actor.
You’re so stupid it’s not even funny. Because, of course, it was so obvious how everyone conspired to arrange for a play in which Berezovsky would have to come out of the box and get a red card. But oh wait there is more, what about the fine arrangement in which Alexanyan waits for the right pass from the Irish to score on his own goal. For your sake I hope you were kidding, otherwise seek mental help.
You must be insane to say some thing like that.
They make very good money and on top of that they have been promised €3000000.00 for hall team by AFF.
Old saying in Russian ” kajdiy dumayet po mere svoyei isporchenasti” in eanglish would be
“Every body thinks as bad as they are”
Watch the video one more time, Sir! The Irish striker handled the ball with his right arm and then the ball bounced off of our goalkeepers right chest…If anybody’s bank account has to be checked, that should be the referee’s bank account.
Armenia was some time ago Soviet soccer champion. Maybe for some of you it is news, but Armenia has great soccer traditions and look likes it will continue.
To play with ten men after losing your veteran goalie to an awful ruling by an awful referee and still maintain the will to fight on and score a goal; Armenia has send a message to the soccer world, I’ll see you in South Africa 2014….
PS The Armenian Football federation should file a complaint against the referees whose performance was much to be desired…
Everybody who ahs a little knowable of soccer know what un injustice happened…therefore .If Irish Federation has any honesty left they should offer a rematch
Putting apart V Alexanyan’s mistake, and with the disadvantage of 10 players to end up the game with 1/1 (I don’t count the first self made goal) isn’t a good performance indeed? I look forward for a brilliant future for the Armenian soccer
Armenian team was the victor in my opinion, first of all how could the referee give a red card without a yellow warning to such a excellent goal keeper, it was obvious our goal keeper had to taken out by a unfair red card to assure Ireland a victory. I saw the Irish players deliberate/malicously/dirty foul at least 25 times and they barely got yellow cards and fianally the referee to make the game have an appearance of a fair game he gives a red card to the Irish player who already had a yellow card on the 83 rd minute when the game was almost over. If this game was played fairly and justly with 11 against 11 and with our goal keeper getting a yellow card not an unfair/fast red card we surely would have won this match. We were not ready for such an unpredicble red card to take our one of the most important player the GOALKEEPER taken out. I mean when was the last time you see a goal keeper getting a red card and in addition not getting a warning with a yellow. I wonder if this referee was paid by some rich gambler or Irish man. The whole world witnessed an unfair game. Armenian players played an excellent game and scored 1 goal 10 against 11, in my opinion Armenia won this game. Shame on this referee, I seriously think they should press charges against an unfair call. The Armenian players will for sure play a good tournament in the next World Cup.
For the record,
The buzz on the internet is that this game was given to the Irish in compensation for their loss during the playoffs for the World Cup 2010 when Thiery Henry of France used his hand to help get a goal that saw Ireland lose.
“Ref hand sit to the Irish was the title of the Daily Star http://www.dailystar.co.uk/football/view/215370/Rep-of-Ireland-2-Armenia-1-Ref-hands-it-to-Irish/
stating that “Armenia’s keeper Roman Berezovsky was sent off for handling Simon Cox’s lob outside his own area as referee Eduardo Gonzalez ignored the fact the striker had controlled the ball with his arm
and the keeper had used his chest to block it.”
Forward of the Irish squad Simon Cox said he doubted that Armenia’s keeper Roman Berezovsky touched the ball by his arm.
Spanish referee Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez red-carded Berezovsky during the Euro 2012 qualifier when the keeper stepped out of the penalty area.
“It just came over my shoulder and I tried to control it. Some you get, some you don’t, but I don’t think it was a handball by the keeper,” The Telegraph quotes Cox.
Cox said the ball brushed his arm before Berezovsky touched it.
Cheating and game manipulation by abusing the “red card”! Everybody who has a little knowledge of soccer knows what injustice happened… cheating! Therefore .If Irish Federation has any honesty left they should offer a rematch.. I would even say all this was planed ahead to humiliate an east European soccer team!!!!
Toros, you hit the nail on the head……Typical FIFA bullshit! Ironically FIFA now owes Armenia…. for what its worth.
Our National team has brought our people nothing less than HONOR and RESPECT! And to hell with you Turk scum who continue to pretend to be Armenian and stirring up shit on this forum.
I was so devastated I forgot the World cup was already played in South Africa 2 years ago; I apologize for that…
My advice to our young glorious team and coach is this. Take a page from the legendary coach Don Shula who in 1971 went to the Super Bowl with the deciding 39 yard field goal of Garo Yepremyan. However, when the Dolphins were defeated in the Super Bowl, the great Shula used that loss to his advantage and a motivating factor for his team, thus accomplish a feat never repeated in the NFL, the undefeated perfect season of 1972…Armenia will be in Brazil 2014
It seems an investigation is in order here. I hope we will press charges at all levels of the organizers.
Armenia should get a wildcard entry, or a rematch.
In any case, the future of Armenian soccer is looking quite good!
I 100% AGREE WITH THE COMMENT BY THE “TRUTH” IN ALL FAIRNESS THERE SHOULD BE A REMATCH AND IRELAND SHOULD BE THE INITIATER FOR THIS REMATCH. FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS.
A- I WATCHED THE REPLAY OF THE VIDEO ABOUT 15 TIMES, AND OVER AND OVER I SEE THE BALL FIRST HITTING THE HAND OF THE IRISH PLAYER AND THEN BOUNCING ON THE CHEST OF THE ARMENIAN GOALKEEPER. IF THE “UEFA” WANTS TO MAINTAIN INEGRITY THEY SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE OBVIOUS MISTAKE OF THE REFEREE THAT CAN EASILY BE PROVEN ON VIDEO”
B- IRELAND DOES NOT WANT TO ENTER THE QUALIFEIR WITH A BAD CARMA LIKE THAT, THEY KNOW VERY WELL THIS WAS A MISTAKE ON THE REFEREE AND EVEN COX THE IRISH PLAYER WAS NOBLE AND MAN ENOUGH TO CONFESS THE TRUTH AFTER THE GAME.
C- IF A REMATCH IS NOT GIVEN THE ENTIRE INEGRITY OF ‘UEFA” IS AT RISK IN MY OPINON AND THE ENTIRE WORLD WHO SAW THE GAME IS WITNESS TO THIS.
I agree on all counts, except that Cox is far from noble or brave. He realized after the game that replays will show everything and that people at home so just what happened, so he admitted to it trying to come off as an honest man. But where was he during the game? Mobbing the referee with the rest of the Irish team to give Berezovsky a red.
