Chamlian Kicks Off Anti-Bullying Campaign

GLENDALE—The problem of bullying has come to be recognized as a nationwide issue. According to the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center, an estimated 30 percent of children in the U.S. are in some way involved with bullying (as either the bully or the person being bullied). Although bullying has never been a serious problem at Chamlian Armenian School, we have to be a witness of our times and be proactive.

Chamlian School Counselor, Seda Batmanian, has taken charge of a special program focusing on educating our students about bullying. Chamlian’s zero tolerance policy on bullying can be found on page 37 of the school handbook.

By incorporating the 6 pillars of Character by The Josephson Institute, the new anti-bullying program will take a direct approach to tackling the issue of bullying from all angles and getting the students involved in different ways. A variety of tools will be used in this program including classroom visits, videos, and an overall look at the bullying problem from the angles of the person being bullied, the bully and the bystander. These tools are designed to foster a candid, open dialogue between the students and their instructors. This continuing program will get the students involved in understanding the problem, the solutions, and the necessary preventative measures that must be taken to avoid being bullied.

In an effort to integrate the latest technology, Batmanian will frequently utilize the SmartBoard in introducing a variety of topics such as problems with bullying, coping skills, and etc. She will also have small group activities with the students for more in-depth discussions about the topic.

This program will have a direct impact on ensuring our core principle of safety at Chamlian Armenian School. We have always tried our best to provide a safe and nurturing environment that focuses on educational growth, and we are taking every step to ensure that principle remains strong.
