Chamlian Drama Club Performs ‘Show & Spell’

A scene from the Chamlian play

GLENDALE—The Chamlian Armenian School’s 7th and 8th grade Drama Club students, on May 21, performed the play “Show & Spell,” a comedy about five middle schoolers who take on overzealous parents, temperamental coaches, and nostalgic relatives as they prepare for the annual spelling bee. With characters that ranged from an incessant cheerleader who cheered all her words to the anxiety-prone daughter of a movie star, this play wonderfully illustrated the pressures kids feel to compete, and the family support that makes it all bearable.

With the guidance of their drama teacher, Melany Melikian, the Drama Club members presented an unforgettable performance for a packed house of students and parents. During the months leading up to the play, Melikian witnessed a group of nervous 7th and 8th graders who developed into confident performers.

“Although I had high expectations, their performance blew me away. Each and every student flourished on stage, as their confidence and sense of accomplishment grew from scene to scene. Not only am I overjoyed that this group of talented students was able to experience the excitement of live theatre, but I am thrilled that they had the chance to step out of their comfort zones, challenge themselves, build strong bonds with one another and embrace their many talents. I am very proud of each cast member, and have no doubt that they will go on to do great things, both on and off the stage,” said Melikian.

Vice Principal, Rita Kaprielian, also expressed her great delight at the wonderful talent displayed by the students, adding that “even though this experience was new to most of them, they all seemed so comfortable and confident on stage.”

Chamlian Armenian School’s administration and faculty said they are incredibly proud of the Drama Club students for their hard work and commitment as they teamed together to bring an inspirational story to life.
