LITTLE ARMENIA—Los Angeles City Councilman Mitch O’Farrell (CD 13) announced a $50,000 grant to the Hollywood Armenian Relief Society Social Service Center, which for the past eight months has been operating with volunteer resources due to budget cuts.

O’Farrell made the announcement during an exclusive interview with Asbarez Editor Ara Khachatourian, and emphasized the importance services provided to the residents of Hollywood and the 13th District by the Center during the past 30 years.

“I want to strengthen it [the Social Service Center] and I want to support it because their work never lets up,” said O’Farrell who stressed that residents of the area still need and count of the myriad services being offered by the ARS Center.

“We’ll be there through the entire time and until I’m a City Councilmember,” added O’Farrell.

The ARS Western US Regional Executive told Asbarez that it was grateful to Councilman O’Farrell for the $50,000 allocation.

“We are grateful that Councilmember O’Farrell trusts in the capacity and integrity of our organization, which is committed to meeting the needs of Hollywood’s diverse community,” said ARS Regional Board Chairwoman Lena Bozoyan.

Writing for Asbarez’s Year-End Special issue, Parik Nazarian reflected on the importance of the Center, saying, “For thousands of clients, documented and undocumented immigrants, coming from all corners of the world, this center has been the first stop, a “HOME” away from home.”

“The people put their trust and faith on the center’s few remaining employees who go beyond their time and responsibilities to fulfill the needs of the sick and elderly, the needy and poor, the helpless and hopeless who cannot speak for themselves. The enter the center with their problems, concerns, fears and questions with a gloomy face and leave the office with the answers and a smile on their face,” added Nazarian in her piece for Asbarez.

O’Farrell and his team toured the Asbarez Newspaper editorial offices, the Horizon Television studios, as well as the adjacent ARS Social Service Center prior to the interview.

O’Farrell was elected to office on May 21, 2013 to succeed now Mayor Eric Garcetti as the Councilmember of the 13th district. His district includes the Little Armenia neighborhood of Hollywood.
