GLENDALE—The Armenian American Medical Society (AAMS) hosted its annual Christmas Celebration and Scholarship Awards Ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 4, at the Impressions Banquet Hall in Glendale. This year the AAMS was able to award twelve worthy students $1000 scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year to assist them in their educational endeavors.
With over 150 AAMS members in attendance, everyone enjoyed a sumptuous dinner and musical entertainment. The evening also included a brief Continuing Medical Education (CME) lecture on “Updates on Novel Anticoagulants in Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation” presented by AAMS Board Member Harry Balian, MD, FACC, FSCAI.
This year, the AAMS scholarships were awarded to Armenian students enrolled in various health care fields including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and allied health. Awardees of the AAMS Scholarships this year included: Arpine Barsegian, Naira Barsegyan, Artin Galoosian, Taline Guevrekian, Kristina Hagopian, Saro Haroun, Harut Hovsepyan, Gary Kirikian, Shogher Nalbandian, Rami Nazar, Gnel Pivazyan and Lily Sarin-Gulian.
The Ananian family has graciously established a new memorial scholarship honoring a long time AAMS member, dear friend and colleague, Dr. Vahan Ananian, who sadly passed away this year. His widow, Anahid Ananian, presented the “Dr. Vahan Ananian Memorial Scholarship” to a deserving student, Lily Sarin-Gulian. Celebrating its 5th year, Hilda Boghosian presented Harut Hovsepyan with the “Dr. Norick Boghossian Memorial Scholarship.” The Friends of AAMS, previously known as the Ladies Auxiliary, presented the scholarship to Taline Guevrekian.
“This year’s scholarship candidates were even more impressive than previous years. I am excited that we are able to recognize the dedication and hard work of twelve Armenian students pursuing their careers in the medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, genetic counseling and psychology,” commented Serineh Melidonian, MD., AAMS President.
“We look forward for yet another successful year in 2015, full of good fortune, exemplary achievements and great health,” the AAMS Executive Committee said in a statement about the event. “This year is especially important for AAMS as it is the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide and the 30th Anniversary of AAMS. Stay tuned for some exciting events to both celebrate and commemorate this exceptional year.”
