YEREVAN (Armenpress)—Georgian and Armenian officials signed an agreement Wednesday on the construction of a new bridge on the Debed River at the Bagratashen-Sadashlo Passing Point on the border of Armenia and Georgia. The document was signed by Armenia’s Miinister of Transportation and Communication Gagik Beglarian and by Georgia’s Deputy Prime Minister Georgi Kvirikashvili. Armenia’s Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian was also present at the signing in Yerevan.
Abrahamian and his Georgian counterpart Irakli Garibashvili had initially signed the above mentioned agreement earlier this month in Tbilisi, and had agreed to name the new bridge the “Bridge of Friendship.”
“Armenia and Georgia have close political and economic ties, and in spite of the fact that Armenia will be joining the Eurasian Economic Union in January, Georgia has signed an associated agreement with Armenia. Accession to the EEU won’t have an impact on our relations. We will use it for the interests of our countries,” Georgia’s Prime Minister said at that meeting. Garibashvili also emphasized that Armenia and Georgia are especially focused on maintaining the existing trade regime between the two countries and the further development of economic relations.
The more we play a balancing act between the EEU and the West the better off we are. There is no sense in putting all our eggs into one basket and then handing the basket over to someone else to carry. We must rely only on ourselves for salvation. No one, and absolutely no one, cares about Armenian intersts more than we Armenians do.
This is good and all that but as long as Armenia has to rely on its neighbors for the transportation of goods it will remain dependent on its neighbors. Armenia needs common borders with Russia or direct/free access to the Black Sea.
So far Georgians have a lot of disagreements and brawls in their Parliament!
