Disaster Averted in Armenia by Neutralizing Armed Gang

YEREVAN (Armenpress)—First Deputy Head of the RA Police, Lieutenant General Hunan Poghosyan alerted the Armenian people about the various types of disasters that were prevented in Nork-Marash as a result of the detected armed gang that was discovered on November 25.

Deputy Police Chief Hunan Poghosyan told a press conference on Monday that  “the group, which plotting particularly serious crimes has been neutralized.”  In response to a question that the National Security Service had announced that high-level government officials were the target of the plot, Poghosyan said: “The criminals were unable to accumulate a large quantity of ammunition.”

Poghosyan also said that the public was skeptical about these threats at first, but then realized that they were wrong.

Taking into account the presumption of innocence and the confidentiality of the investigation process of the case, Poghosyan did not provide details of the case, but only noted that measures were continuing to be taken and the body implementing preliminary investigation will make more information public in due time.

Former resident of Yerevan, Artur Vardanyan, who was residing abroad, arrived in Armenia in April, according to the NSS, formed and headed a criminal group. Based on preliminary information, the group illegally acquired a large number of weapons and ammunition concealing it in a rented house in Nork district of Yerevan.

In joint searches with the Police on November 25, several caliber of rifles, pistols, grenade launchers, grenades, explosive materials and equipment, cartridges, and bullets were discovered.   Artur Vardanyan and 9 members of the criminal group were discovered in the house during the searches. The criminals have been arrested.

A criminal case has been initiated in Investigative Department of the National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia in accordance with parts 1 and 2 of Article 223 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia. Preliminary investigation is being held.
