Kurdish Asylum Seekers from Armenia Leave US Embassy

BONN (Reuter)-Kurdish asylum seekers from Armenia’slipped into the US embassy compound in Bonn Wednesday and threatened suicide by fire during a 10-hour protest against deportation from Germany.

Some of the 22 Kurds poured what appeared to be gasoline on themselves–an embassy spokesman’said. "It was a gesture we took seriously. We had people standing by with fire extinguishers. The gas evaporated and no one was hurt."

Police said the group lived at Paderborn–125 miles east of Bonn and several of them had been ordered to leave the country by the end of April because their applications for asylum had been rejected.

They walked in through a vehicle gate at 10.20 a.m. and left at 7.30 p.m. after negotiating with the German police–the embassy spokesman’said. "They left voluntarily without incident. The matter is now in the hands of the German authorities."

Police said they would investigate whether to charge the Kurds with coercion and breaking and entering.
