Kapan Teachers Strike Demand Wages

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Teachers of Kapan’s 13 schools went on strike Thursday.

They are demanding that their salaries be paid with taking into consideration the increase in the exchange-value of the dollar.

They are also demanding higher salaries within the next six months and provision with holiday pay in time. Besides they are going to apply to republican and regional authorities to ask for a discount of 50% in using municipal transport and public utilities.

Teachers also suggest that pupils should pay for their school education. Vahe Israelian–the Strike Committee’s Chairman–said they won’t end the strike until their deman’s have been met or a clear reply from relevant authorities is received.

The strike began during a meeting with Deputy Minister for Education and Sciences Levon Galstian–when 250 teachers left the hall of Kapan’s secondary school 1 in protest.

Chairman of Teachers Trade Union Anoushavan Adamian tried to explain to the teachers–who had gathered near the school building–that he had sent telegrams to the Minister for Education and Sciences–the Minister for Finance–Chairman of the Council of Trade Unions of Armenia describing the current situation.

He urged the teachers to suspend their strike until the telegrams were answered. However–the teachers remained on strike.
