Defense Ministry Denies Chemical Weapons Charges

YEREVAN (Respublica Armenia)–Responding to a publication in the Moskovskiy Komsomolets daily about an alleged chemical weaponry supply to Armenia–the Defense Ministry said this was merely an expression of the anti-Armenian propaganda–carried out by Azerbaijan.

Deputy Head of press service of the defense ministry–Hovik Charkhchian said this information is not based on fact.

He reminded that Azerbaijan wasn’t able to prove its recent declaration about the supply of Russian weaponry to Armenia.

According to a report in Russian Moskovskiy communist daily’s Monday edition–Azeri President Gaidar Aliyev declared that according to his reliable sources–Armenia has acquired chemical weaponry.

The newspaper added that its own sources in Tbilisi and Baku explained that the matter perhaps concerned the 15 trucks transferred to Armenia–5 of which were loaded with defense weapons–and 10 with offensive equipment.

The newspaper further commented on the matter saying–"This is sensational information since Russia established a strict ban on the transport of chemical weaponry. Still–considering that the Azeri President personally made this information public–and Georgians confirmed it–there are reasons to conduct a serious probe into the matter."
