Armenian Independence Day Marked in Armenia

YEREVAN (Yerevan News Service)–In celebration of Armenian Independence Day–a pilgrimage to the grave of national leader Aram Manoukian took place Wednesday at the Yerevan State Cemetery. The event which was organized by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Yerevan district chapter–drew a large number of participants.

Opening remarks were made by chapter member Gagik Yeran’syan–and the keynote address was delivered by recently released so-called "Dro" defendant Gegham Manoukian.

Manoukian outlined the history of the first Armenian Republic–and the role of the ARF in its establishment.

He also spoke of the heroic acts of Aram Manoukian–who is considered the founding force behind the republic.

Noting the importance of reestablishing the independence of Armenia–once again–Manoukyan criticized the mode of operation of the current government by explaining that the political persecution and trials in the country have become hindrances in the strengthening of the statehood of the Armenian nation.

"Armenia’s independence is once again endangered–and it is our responsibility to protect our independence as a value of utmost significance," said Manoukian.

Closing remarks were made by ARF Executive Council of Armenia representative Ardashes Shahbazyan–following whom the oath ceremony for eight novices joining the ran’s of the ARF was conducted.

Armenian Independence was also marked in various cities and Armenian coimmunities around the world.
