Young Armenian Tennis Player Garners Significant Victories

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Olympic Sports School student Harutiun Sofian placed first out of 190 opponents in his age division at an international tennis tournament held in Kiev last week. At a tournament commemorating aircraft designer Antonov–Sofian won first place in the 14-year old age group. He was also given a special award for being the most promising prospective tennis player. The award was sponsored by the family of famous tennis player Alexander Medvedev.

Sofian–along with partner Konstantin Burchuladze–won first place in the doubles tournament.

At the Vikotik tournament–at which 65 players from ten countries were present–Sofian placed eighth in the 16-year old age group–while in the tournament sponsored by Children Protection Day–which was attended by over 220 participants from seven countries–he placed first overall–Armenia’s new agencies reported.

The International Federation of Tennis included Sofian into its East European team and invited him to the Netherlands for training.
