Tomsen Says Peace to be Achieved Through Compromise

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A lecture–held at the Institute of Oriental Studies–Armenian Academy of Sciences–US Ambassador to Armenia Peter Tomsen noted that since the collapse of the Soviet Union more that five years ago–Russia–Armenia and Azerbaijan have made progress in consolidating their statehood and in instituting political and economic reforms.

He emphasized that the United States do everything it can to establish peace in the region. In this case–the Caucasus can become the link between Russia and Turkey to promote both the development of the states and that of interstate relations. However–according to ambassador–though the great powers wish to contribute to establishment of peace–these problems should be solved by the parties to the conflict themselves basing on a mutual compromise. Otherwise–all the achievemen’s of the long negotiating process will be lost.

According to Tomsen–today while rendering financial assistance the states donors and international organizations give preference to those programs that are aimed at regional cooperation and promote solution of common problems.

Asked about Azerbaijan-Armenia confrontations–Tomsen opined that the historical memory should not prevail over adoption of political decisions. As to the fact that Iran is absent in the Russia-Caucasus-Turkey cooperation given by the ambassador–Tomsen noted that he would not like to speak about this–because the State and Armenia have different relations with Iran.

Asked about the territorial integrity of the former USSR republics–Tomsen emphasized that among the principles of OSCE–which also includes the US and Armenia–is the inviolability of borders.

In connection with the US’s stance on the Taliban movement–the Ambassador said that the current situation in Afghanistan is explained by the consequences of the former USSR’s 10-year military presence in that country.
