Haik Vardanian Arrested

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenia’s police recently arrested Haik Vardanian–who had been wanted on charges of alleged participation public disturbance following the September presidential elections.

Vardanian’s defense attorney Vahagn Avakian stated there his client’s arrest was groundless since–according to the records–Vardanian assisted National Assembly Speaker Babken Ararktsian and escorted him to the hospital after he was beat up by an alleged opposition mob during the Sept. 25 protests.

According to a statement by Prosecutor General Henrik Khachatrian–Vardanian could be released if former presidential candidate Ashot Manucharian were to confirm the defendant’s testimony.

Avakian said that he would submit a letter to the Prosecutor’s investigator–Vardan Khalafian–urging him to subpoena Ararktsian to help clear Vardanian.
