FourthSeptember 25Case Hearings Begin in Yerevan

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The fourth case related to the September 25 events began Wednesday at the Supreme Court in Yerevan.

Defendant Mannik Sargssian was charged with mass disturbances and terrorist acts against a statesman. Vice-Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Ara Sahakian confirmed that on Sept. 25–1996–Sargssian beat him several times with a wooden baton. Other victims say that they saw no baton in Sargssian’s hands.

Parliament Member Avet Grigorian said that he had not been physically injured on that day–but added that he had morally been damaged when Sargssian took his eyeglasses.

Employees of the National Assembly–Samvel Ayrian–Edward Avetissian and Khachatour Hovhanissian–said that they did not know the defendant. Hovhanissian said that the damage estimates to the National Assembly done on September 26 were correct and that it had not been exaggerated.

The next court session is scheduled for Thursday.
