Armenian American Scientist Receives Honorary Doctoral

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Columbia University–Edgar Hovsepian was the title of Honorary Doctor of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia Wednesday for his contribution to the health care system of Armenia.

The president of NAS–Fadey Sargssian said in his address that after the devastating earthquake of 1988–Hovsepian organized and assisted in the Fund for Armenian Relief which was set up in the United States. Hovsepian also assisted in equipping the Health Ministry’s library–implementing a number of medical programs and organizing numerous scientific conferences. He is a member of 40 international scientific and public organizations and has more than 150 publications on Neurosurgery.

In 1992–the leadership of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church of the United States named Hovsepian "The Armenian of the Year".

Hovsepian stressed that in Armenia–which is currently in transition–science plays a great role in the building of a stable statehood.

Hovsepian is scheduled to attend an international symposium on clinical anesthesiology and he will also be visiting a number of Yerevan’s clinics.
