Azeri Government Disrupts Iranian TV Broadcast

BAKU (Armenpress)–Following an order by the head of the Azeri state broadcast media–the Iranian television wave length which reached a large number of Azeri audiences was cut off Thursday.

This incident is part of a series of such actions taken by the state controlled media head. Azeri viewers were left without picture last Sunday after a similar order. Sometime later–the government announced that disruption of the program was done to halt the dissemination of anti-Azeri information from the Iranian outlet.

The head of the state media then signed an agreement to halt the broadcast of Iranian television programming entirely.

These steps were explained as a course of action to protect Azeri interests. According to the explanation–the Iranian programming caught the attention of minorities in Azerbaijan–who were being encouraged to rise against the government. The statement went on to say that the Iranian minority was inspired to take such actions by Armenian sources.

According to the state run media–the reinstatement of Iranian programming will depend on Iran’s steps toward "rectifying the situation."

Concerned with the ban–the British Broadcasting Corporation has addressed the issue with the Iranian embassy in Baku. The official response of the Iranian embassy has thus far explained the disruption of programming as being caused by technical difficulties.
